Coffee Art

Last summer, we had an afternoon layover in Amsterdam, so we took the train into the city for a few hours. And we popped into Urban Outfitters. Not for the reason that most might visit it, but because we happened to see something about coffee. Continue reading Coffee Art

Wrap it up

One thing I love here is how easy gift-wrapping is. In America, it was either not an option, or you had to pay a fee if you wanted a purchase wrapped at the store.

Not in Norway! Continue reading Wrap it up

When we returned from our two months in the states, we were excited (and quite surprised!) to see that our town was getting its very own Domino’s Pizza.

Fast forward to this past weekend. Our little American pizza joint had its grand opening. So tonight, we decided we should give it a try.

Coffee of the Month

One of the perks of living here is being relatively close to the world-famous coffee roaster, Tim Wendelboe (read about him HERE). Anytime we make it to Oslo, we try to stop by Tim’s shop for a pour over or an espresso, and a couple of bags of beans to take with.

One of the perks of living in Norway, Sweden, or Denmark is that you can sign up for Tim’s coffee subscription program. Monthly shipments of their freshest beans, sent directly to your door.

Soaked Shoes? No Problem!

Tucked in a corner behind a door in our entry way hangs an item I didn’t even known existed before moving to Europe. And yet, in these months of snow and slush (and in the rainy months as well, in fact), it’s come to be a favorite.

Meet our shoe dryer.IMG_3919

Yes, it is a beautiful thing. Not aesthetically, of course. But when it comes to all those wet gloves and snow shoes that show up in our house this time of year, this little gadget is a lifesaver.

I mean, have you smelled a pair of gloves that your kid used while playing in the snow and then left in their backpack? Nasty.

And have you ever wondered how long it takes for a pair of snow boots to completely dry out on the inside after a busy day of throwing snow balls, building snowmen, and digging snow tunnels? Somewhere in the neighborhood of an eternity.

But this handy tool dries things out without warping or shrinking them like can happen in the dryer. Or without the noise of shoes in the dryer. Or the damage that can cause.

We just slip the gloves or boots over the ends of the hoses, and rotate the timer, and cool air blows for the selected amount of time.

And with two boys, we opted for the model that dries two pairs (shoes or gloves) at once.

A shoe dryer. Just another of the things we’ve learned to love while living here!

21 years and a re-post

Below is the post I wrote on this day last year. It’s now been twenty-one years. I continue to be thankful for the fact that I’m among the survivors and for all that I’ve learned in the process.

Twenty years ago today, my oncologist confirmed that all of my scans were clear. Thirteen months of chemotherapy behind me, and loads of possibility and unknowns ahead. I was officially in remission, off-therapy, and a cancer survivor*.

Kaffetur 27 / Coffee Tour #27: Playground Coffee, Hamburg Germany

This week’s coffee tour is a bit of a throw-back.
While Zack was visiting friend in Germany last year, he had the chance to pop into Playground Coffee.
Playground is housed inside Otto’s Burgers, a very popular spot for burgers, and weekend brunch.

As it turned out on his visit, Otto’s had recently endured a fire. As such, the windows clearly explained,

NO BURGER
Just Coffee

Then again, coffee was exactly what Zack was looking for.

Playground’s set-up is no-frills. A quality third wave coffee shop with some playful splashes of color and chalkboard design thrown in. After all, you gotta find a bit of vintage style when you find yourself with prime real estate in a university neighborhood.

The barista behind the counter was from Australia. He had vast experience and really knew his stuff.

Zack thoroughly enjoyed his pour over.

Playground’s coffee packaging is almost as enjoyable as its coffee. Be sure to check it out on their website.
