Kaffetur 30 / Coffee Tour #30: Drukarnia, Gdansk (Poland)

p1100878When traveling, you can’t let the weather slow you down.

It’s one thing to say that, but we found ourselves having to  put this theory into practice on our recent trip to Gdansk.

Despite the fact that autumn decided to come on in full force with cold temps and lots of rain, we pressed on and enjoyed exploring the city. And I must say that Gdansk is a beautiful city with a lovely old town area, lots of great restaurants, beautiful churches and amber everywhere.

p1100927Yes, we explored a lot, but we were also sensible. I am not a fan of staying out endlessly in cold rain.

So what does one do when the weather clearly isn’t cooperating? As any true java addict coffee lover would do, we looked for a good home-away-from-home cafe.

And that’s exactly what we found when we walked into Drukarnia.

p1100926Walking down Old Town Gdansk’s Mariacka Street, it would be easy to miss this cafe, nestled snuggly and discreetly amongst the dozens of amber stores and vendors that surround it. But with its sleek and clean industrial design spread over the two narrow levels, and a staff who really knows their way around a number of alternative brewing methods, Drukarnia is one place a true coffee lover definitely should not miss.

The knowledgeable baristas offer a selection of coffees from top Europeanp1100943 roasters, and an assortment of brewing methods including Chemex, v60, Aeropress and syphon. In addition they serve tea, a light food menu and an assortment of craft beers. You can even stop by for breakfast, a plus when you are on holiday and don’t feel like cooking in the morning!

The constant stream of customers made me think Drukarnia was a longtime staple of Mariacka. But as it turns out, the establishment is just barely p1100924a year old.

I imagine the shop’s appeal is even greater in the warmer months, when you could choose an indoor seat near the counter, one in the loft upstairs, or even on the cozy patio out front. But for us, we could not have found a better place to stop. We felt comfortable and at home from the get-go.

p1100928It’s also nice (or a sign of a coffee problem?) when the staff starts recognizing you when you come in. We were only in the city four days, and managed to make ourselves at home in the shop three of those four days (we would have been there every day had we found it on day one!). Each of Drukarnia’s baristas was kind and helpful, giving us tips on the best coffee for our preferred brewing method, or vice versa.

p1100916We hope to travel back to Gdansk again, in warmer weather. And when we do, we’ll be sure to stop by Drukarnia again. More than once. Again.
